Immense credit goes to Plummer, not just for his discovery, but for the lengths he went to to make Google acknowledge the problem. Plummer highlights that Google has now listed the flaw as a ‘P1’ (top priority) fix, which is currently “in progress.” We'll keep you posted with our assessment and the direction that this issue takes. We apologize again for the confusion and we understand our initial response might have been frustrating, thank you so much for pressing on for us to take a closer look at this! IM+ All-in-One Messenger for Android shines above other chat apps by offering support for more networks in one of the most stylish packages around.Plummer reports that Google initially dismissed his discovery as “intended behaviour” before his tweets about it went viral, and the company acknowledged the error. If you use more than one service to chat with your friends and family, there's no reason not to use it. The app does everything you'd expect a messaging app to do better than any other app in the Play Store. Though your account gets connected in seconds, you can't view or edit your own or your friends' profiles. The app even uses your standard notification noises for new chats and messages. It's actually better looking than most of the individual messaging apps. Instead, it combines all of the apps into a sleek, black layout with very smooth tabbed navigation. IM+ All-in-One Messenger for Android doesn't piggyback on any one messaging app's layout. That kicks out the ads, too - but you probably won't notice those anyway. If you want popular messaging service Skype, you have to shell out $4.99 for the pro version. It syncs with AIM, MSN, Facebook, Google Chat, and dozens of other messaging clients - so you'll need to log in to each. This app constantly works in the background, so it will use up some battery life and RAM. It supports more networks than you'll even know existed and makes all of your buddy lists easy to navigate. IM+ All-in-One Messenger for Android not only makes it possible, but incredibly easy, too. If your friends are spread out in the vast ether that is the Internet, it's not easy to round them up in one app.

Alternatively, a MOSFET requires gate current only to charge and discharge its gate capacitances so under dc drive conditions the drive current is negligible. High-gain devices minimize such losses, and the fact that bipolar transistors require less than 1 volt to fully turn on and show better temperature stability can be useful in low-voltage or battery-powered applications. For example, bipolar transistors require sufficient base current to achieve their lowest R CE(sat) values, and the base drive loss must be taken into account in power dissipation calculations. Care must be taken to check the drive conditions when comparing the two technologies. This characteristic leads to bipolars running cooler at high current densities, and/or higher continuous currents for comparable die area.ĭrive requirements are arguably where bipolars and MOSFETs differ most. Because bipolar-transistor gain rises with temperature and reduces the V BE component of VCE(sat), the rise in bipolar R CE(sat) is generally half that of a MOSFET's equivalent R DS(on). How switch resistance changes with temperature is another important factor in determining the current capability of a power switch. When a bidirectional capability is required, this attribute can eliminate the need for a series diode or back-to-back MOSFET pair and their attendant conduction losses. Also, don't forget that bipolar transistors block voltage in two directions, as specified by their BV EBO or BV ECO characteristic. A similarly rated MOSFET has such high specific on-resistance and poor current capabilities that it requires packages such as D-PAK to accommodate the necessary silicon area. For example, the 450V-rated FMMT459 NPN transistor has a current capability of 150mA and a typical R CE(sat) of just 1.4ïï that allows SOT-23 packaging. The difference in the exponent value in these formulae emphasizes the specific-area-resistance advantage that the bipolar transistors hold over MOSFETs as breakdown voltages increase. Breakdown voltage versus R CE(sat) for the Zetex third generation transistor series As is demonstrated in the straight-line plot in Figure 2, the relationship between breakdown voltage and collector-emitter saturation voltage for the Zetex third generation transistor series yields:įigure 2. MOSFETs don't possess any similar conductivity modulation mechanism, which accounts for one of the bipolar transistor's advantages. Furthermore, bipolar transistors benefit from conductivity modulation of the resistive collector region when operated as a saturated switch, significantly reducing the R CE(sat). ![]() By optimizing process technology and chip layout, voltage biasing and current flow is evenly distributed across the chip area to maximize silicon efficiency. Under the correct drive conditions, it's worth noting that bipolar transistors have matched or bettered MOSFETs in terms of die-area-specific on-state resistance (see Figure 1). ![]() Higher voltage MOSFETs also suffer from the high resistance of the lightly doped drain region so on-resistance typically increases proportionally with breakdown voltage: The results are spectacular – especially at low breakdown voltages – but current flow remains concentrated in narrow channel regions. Trench MOSFETs give lower on-resistance by allowing greater channel density. The first characteristic that designers most often consider is on-state resistance for a given breakdown voltage. It's therefore important to review the characteristics and benefits of each technology to extract the best system performance. Meanwhile, developments in bipolar transistors continue to position the technology to rival or exceed MOSFET performance in many applications. In recent years, MOSFETs have benefited from huge investments in technology and promotion alike, overshadowing bipolar devices to the degree that many designers view bipolars as old technology. ![]() The way that these transport layer checksums are computed have virtually identical performance for IPv4 and IPv6. These checksums are functionally equivalent and the computation of the checksum is only slightly different for IPv4 and IPv6. There are TCP checksums for IPv4 and IPv6 and UDP checksums for IPv4 and IPv6. Both IPv4 and IPv6 use checksums for TCP and UDP packets. Even though IPv6 packets are larger, they can still be hardware accelerated like IPv4 and the performance difference is negligible.īoth IPv4 and IPv6 protocols support the same transport layer protocols above them. ![]() Another difference between IPv4 and IPv6 is that IPv4 packets may be variable in length while the basic IPv6 header is a fixed 40-bytes. IPv6 still uses a Hop Limit value within its header and that is decremented every Layer-3 hop along the transmission path, but that does not result in any header checksum calculation. ![]() IPv6 does not have any type of header checksum. We now have higher quality copper connections and cables and far greater use of fiber optic communications with vastly better error rates than links from the 1980s. In contrast, IPv6 was created when transmission link quality was improving. This all adds up to lots of checking to determine if a bit error has occurred, adding to the protocol overhead, and potentially decreasing performance. There are methods to detect bit errors at Layer-1, there are checksums at Layer-2, a checksum in the header at Layer-3, and TCP implements options for retransmissions, of course, so applications can check if an error occurred in the payload. This results in the router having to re-compute the header checksum each hop along the transmission path. With IPv4, as each packet is forwarded across a Layer-3 hop, the header Time To Live (TTL) value is decremented by one. Therefore, IPv4 implements a header checksum to determine if there is an error in the fields in the IPv4 header itself. IPv4 was created at a time when WAN transmission links were prone to bit errors. IPv6 performance is streamlined as a result of its native communication.Ĭhecksums for Determining IP Packet Bit Errors Refreshingly, IPv6 does not need or use any NAT or PAT functionality and restores the native end-to-end nature of the IP protocol. ![]() Lee Howard has given presentations on the TCO for CGN and has concluded that service providers should work to deploy as little CGN as they can get away with. As ISPs explore the use of Carrier Grade NAT (CGN), they start to understand how this can negatively impact their end-user experience by negatively affecting some applications. There are many benefits to avoiding the use of NATs. The packet manipulation performed by the NAT function can add latency and jitter to IPv4 packets. As a result, there is congestion, not for Internet bandwidth, but for TCP/UDP port space and limited IPv4 address pool resources. Many applications create many connections and with numerous users behind a single NAT/PAT. The NAT/PAT system then has to maintain connection state, reversing the process on the response packets, so that the return traffic can reach the original packet source. The packet is then forwarded on to the IPv4 destination address. For IPv4, every time a packet crosses a NAT/PAT middle-box, the packet source address is re-written, and the TCP/UDP source port is changed. IPv6 uses global addresses and typically does not rely on NAT in any way. One of the key differences between IPv4 and IPv6 is that IPv4 relies heavily on Network Address Translation (NAT) and Port Address Translation (PAT) due to IPv4 address exhaustion. Now, let’s consider the IPv6 protocol and see if there are any fundamental characteristics of IPv6 that could make it faster in certain circumstances. Similar to the measurements of the amounts of IPv6 traffic observed on the Internet, it depends on where you take your measurements. Facebook’s Paul Saab concluded that their customers experience faster performance over native IPv6. Geoff Huston’s research concluded that IPv4 and IPv6 can be equivalent in many cases. In the first part of this blog, we reviewed some recent studies on the performance of IPv6 compared with IPv4. ![]() The PCSX2 emuIator is now instaIled, so its timé to configure éverything before running yóur first game.
